HISTORY OF VILLA PALLERO

The actual building Villa Pallero dates back 500 years plus, but there has been a settlement at “Poggio Pallero” since the Etruscan era (9th Century BC).  It is shown on the oldest maps as “Podere Poggio al Pallero”.

Recent discoveries of tombs scattering the area surrounding Pallero have brought to light many artefacts from the Etruscan period; a display can be viewed in the Civic Museum of San Gimignano under a section “Poggio Pallero”.

Prior to it’s restoration from a farm house circa 20 years ago, Pallero had been abandoned for over 25 years after the mezzanine farmers were forced to leave the Colonica during the 60’s and for years only used the house for animals in the downstairs stables.  The ancient road that Pallero sits on was originally a salt and pilgrim road leading from the now long abandoned town of Castel Vecchio to the coast and then continuing by sea to the Holy Land.  In those days we understand that Pallero was an “Ostello” for travellers as it was one of very few houses on the route.
Today the road does not continue and now terminates at the sheep farm.

Due to its strategically important location, Pallero was an ally defending point during both the first and second world wars.  There is still a shooting “shart”  in the corridor of one of the guest apartments

The Etruscans knew exactly where to build when it came to maximising on peace and calm which they believed to be caused by magnetic influences and water veins.  This is the “magically relaxing” feeling guests come back to Pallero for year after year !
